Ebook About
Krys Malcolm Belc's visual memoir-in-essays explores how the experience of gestational parenthood—conceiving, birthing, and breastfeeding his son Samson—eventually clarified his gender identity.Krys Malcolm Belc has thought a lot about the interplay between parenthood and gender. As a nonbinary, transmasculine parent, giving birth to his son Samson clarified his gender identity. And yet, when his partner, Anna, adopted Samson, the legal documents listed Belc as “the natural mother of the child.”   By considering how the experiences contained under the umbrella of “motherhood” don’t fully align with Belc’s own experience, The Natural Mother of the Child journeys both toward and through common perceptions of what it means to have a body and how that body can influence the perception of a family. With this visual memoir in essays, Belc has created a new kind of life record, one that engages directly with the documentation often thought to constitute a record of one’s life—childhood photos, birth certificates—and addresses his deep ambivalence about the “before” and “after” so prevalent in trans stories, which feels apart from his own experience.   The Natural Mother of the Child is the story of a person moving past societal expectations to take control of his own narrative, with prose that delights in the intimate dailiness of family life and explores how much we can ever really know when we enter into parenting.

Book The Natural Mother of the Child: A Memoir of Nonbinary Parenthood Review :

As a heterosexual, septuagenarian female with two adult children, this reviewer was interested in the dynamics of a family with a non-binary transgender parent. Belc's memoir gives some insight into such a family. Like many transgender humans, Belc had discomfort in childhood about being a female. By college, Belc and Anna fell in love and married (twice). Anna was the first to have a baby boy. They decided Krys would have a child so the siblings would be about a year apart. The changes in Krys's pregnant body were simultaneously exciting and repulsive. The delivery of Samson was frightening and exciting. Then followed months of exhausting chronic baby care, day and night. Several years pass before Anna gives birth to another son. As his sons grow, Krys has chronic anxiety about especially his genetic offspring. So far none of this is different from any other family. Most parents, love their children, worry about them and hope for the best future for them. After Samson is weaned, Krys begins testosterone treatment, grows a beard and develops broad shoulders. There is a lot of anger inside Krys: anger that his genetic son would have a childhood, he might have had if he had been allowed to be the gender he felt he was as a child, fearful his anger might lead to shaken baby syndrome, anger that his son's birth certificate lists him as "mother" rather than "gestational parent" and disappointment that medical and social service personnel continue to call him "mother". He is sad that he "can never have my past and present at the same time." Krys admits he is "needy."At times, Belc's narrative is repetitive and confusingly non-linear. It is the hope of this reviewer that by writing his memoir, the author can diminish his anger and feel more needed than needy. Terms like "mother, father, husband and wife" are labels. In the 21st century in the United States, families come in all sizes and configurations and that bodes well for the welfare of all.
The Natural Mother of the Child is memoir, though about much more than parenting and pregnancy, Krys Malcolm Belc ping pongs between his own childhood, relationships, being an adult child, adulting, and finally pregnancy and parenting. The audiobook is read by the author which is a good fit for this memoir. I would have enjoyed the book in print more probably - mostly due to the jumping timeline for which print allows more reader pauses and reflection. That being said, as a women’s health physician, this book raises several topics that I hope to consider carefully in the future. The word “mother” vs “parent” and becoming pregnant while navigating unease about your body. The author somewhat brushes over some of his violent streaks. This made me uncomfortable and will mean I’ll recommend it selectively to patients. Had he been more apologetic for those outbursts or forthcoming about the extent of it, that might have been different. As written, I’m uncertain to what extent this has impacted his wife and family. With rage and anger being so prominent in our culture, we need to treat this trigger with caution. Finally, I wish publishers would review medial comments from non-medical authors more carefully. Perhaps mistakes will be corrected in the final audiobook - but some of the comments about mechanisms of medications are downright wrong.
